Catechesis for Pentecost Sunday
Catechesis Class June 4, 2006 Pentecost Sunday
Begin with Luther’s Morning Prayer Books of the Bible
Review What is Confession? Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven. What sins should we confess? Before God we should plead guilty of all sins, even those we are not aware of, as we do in the Lord’s Prayer; but before the pastor we should confess only those sins which we know and feel in our hearts. Which are these? Consider your place in life according to the Ten Commandments: Are you a father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, or worker? Have you been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy? Have you been hot-tempered, rude, or quarrelsome? Have you hurt someone by your words or deeds? Have you stolen, been negligent, wasted anything, or done any harm?
What is the Office of the Keys? The Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given to His church on earth to forgive the sins of the repentant sinners, but to withhold forgiveness from the unrepentant as long as they do not repent. Where is this written? This is what St. John the Evangelist writes in chapter twenty: The Lord Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” John 20:22-23 What do you believe according to these words? I believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and certain , even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us himself.
New Lesson Today is Pentecost which is fifty days after Easter. (Pentateuch/5 books of law). Also called WhitSunday because the newly baptized wore white (early church baptized on Easter, Pentecost etc not every Sunday). The color on the altar is red because the Holy Spirit came to the disciples (the faithful few who were waiting) and the visible sign was a tongue of fire (red). It is today that God delivered what He had promised – the Spirit of Truth, the Counselor, the Holy Spirit. We are able to believe today because the Holy Ghost has called us by the Gospel.
Memorize: Explain the Table of Duties & vocation Let each his lesson learn with care, and all the household well shall fare. What the Hearers Owe Their Pastors.
The Lord has commanded that those who preach the Gospel should receive their living from the Gospel. I Cor 9:14
Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Gal 6:6-7
Explain, read and enact the Gospel lesson: John 14:23-31 Explain read & enact Acts 2:1-13
Sing TLH 229
Holy Spirit, hear us on this sacred day; Come to us with blessing, come with us to stay.
Come as once Thou camest to the faithful few patiently awaiting Jesus’ promise true.
Up to heav’n ascending, Our dear Lord has gone; Yet His little children Leaves He not alone.
To His blessed promise Now in faith we cling. Comforter most holy, Spread o’er us Thy wing.
Lighten Thou our darkness, Be Thyself our Light; Strengthen Thou our weakness, Spirit of all might.
Spirit of Adoption, Make us overflow With Thy sevenfold blessing And in grace to grow.
Into Christ baptized, grant that we may be Day and night, dear Spirit, Perfected by Thee.
